Every student faces the question of ‘what next’ after class 12th and 10th. Firstly, to decide a stream, and then, to decide the graduation course! Career counseling involves scientifically developed aptitude tests and personality tests that help the counselor give the best suited career advice to the student based on his report of his interest, aptitude, personality and intellectual level.
- To enable students to decide rationally and scientifically the line of higher studies or specialized skills they would like to pursue for a satisfying and fulfilling career.
- To help in determining a student’s true potential.
- To help student in clearing doubts by giving them a clear cut view of what they can expect from various educational courses.
- To support and boost the morale of student by understanding his/her necessities, strengths and weeknesses.
Choosing a career that matches one’s interest, aptitude and personality itself translates into professional success, effectiveness and happiness. The main aim of career counseling is to help students choose a field that is in tune with their skills and their job expectations. Thus, with the help of career counseling, most candidates end up choosing the right career, and perform their level best, which ultimately helps them succeed.
WHAT IS CAREER COUNSELING ?
Career Development is a lifelong process that, whether you know it or not, actually started when you were born! There are a number of factors that influence your career development, and the choice of a viable option that includes your interests, abilities, values, personality and circumstances. Every day different careers and professional opportunities are emerging. No matter how much you want to do all of them you will have to prioritize and choose the best option for yourself.
Career Counseling is a process of discovery that will help you to explore and understand yourself and the “world of work” in order to make rational career, educational, and life decisions.
In very basic terms Career Counseling is finding the answers to some very common questions:
- What field of study should I pursue?
- What if I make a choice and then change my mind?
- What if my career goals are different from what my family thinks they should be?
- What type of work environment fits me best?
Ask all the grownups you know what they wanted to become when they were young. The probability is very few of them actually became what they aspired towards in childhood. This may not fundamentally be a reflection of their failure – but an important indication of change. Situations change, ideas change and so do people and their circumstances. This is the case for most people. Some of you may work in traditional professions and ‘move along a well planned path’. But many could end up working in professions that you or even your parents may have never heard about today.
Career planning can be a challenging task as individuals are faced with choices, changes and obstacles; at an age where the knowledge and awareness is meager and wisdom yet not mature.
HOW WE GO AHEAD
As a part of our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, a team of efficient counselors has been visiting various schools of UP/Bihar/North East/ Jharkhand. We go to schools (As part of Student Connect Program) and conduct the under mentioned activities.
A – An initial quiz test called the ”Initial Qualification Test”(IQT), which is a 15 min. Objective Type Science Quiz for class 12th Science students(any stream) consisting of 20 multiple choice questions is conducted in the first round– those students who clear the minimum cutoff are then invited for District Level Competition round of ‘Sharda Science Olympiad’ in their respective districts for an objective multiple choice quiz Science competition. For the first round (IQT) our counselor team visits around 500 schools in North & North East India and students of these schools can take the IQT test in their respective schools. Those students, whose schools our Counselor Team does not visit ………….can take the Initial Qualification Test (IQT) online (by Registering on this portal in the menu section) and thus qualify for the District Level Round.
B – Our team in the schools gives a brief of 20 min presentation to students about logical career selection and its methodology and importance and invites them to participate in District Level Science Olympiad ( the date/time/venue of which is communicated to the shortlisted students who have cleared the minimum cut off in the IQT test) ……………
At the District Level Science Olympiad ( SSO), a Quiz competition as in IQT is held but of 40 questions of higher level of difficulty and the results are announced at the venue itself and winner s are awarded.
After the Olympiad ends, students who are interested in career counselling stay on and they appear in an additional career counselling test, in which we conduct an objective type test to evaluate the various parameters for career counseling purposes e.g. Interest Inventory Test, the Personality Traits Test and the Aptitude Test of the students. Based on this ,we generate a four page report about each student giving complete analysis and indicating the specific preference career areas suited for the students. The student then keeping in mind these professed career options can visit our “world of work” (career option details ) to choose what suits him and his abilities best. The financial constraints, the family location and social beliefs of elders of the students family shall have also to be taken into account before choosing a viable career most suited to the specific needs of each case.
After this whole process, a student would have explored his interest, aptitude, personality and intellectual level And discovered how these combine to make him more suitable for certain preferred vocations. The students is far better aware and in the position to understand which is the best suited career for him/her.The said reports can be mailed to individual students upon request once his/her name appears on the portal in the reports ready list; student can also access the report on the portal using a password sent on his phone
In case the student finds any difficulty in exploring and understanding the most suited career choice after exploring the Career Guidance Portal, then he/she may fix an appointment with one of our expert counselors on any Saturday and visit our campus for an hour of face to face discussion ( if located in close vicinity). In case a visit is not possible they can seek an interview with the counselor online and interview either on “Skype” or on “Hike Messenger” can be arranged .
